EarthCheck: AKI stands out in regional benchmarking
Designed from the outset with responsible resource management in mind, AKI Family Resort Plose achieved EarthCheck Bronze Benchmarking status for the first time in 2026, delivering outstanding results against regional benchmarks.
Energy efficiency, renewable energy and responsible use of natural resources were key considerations from the earliest planning stages. Today, these priorities are reflected in both the resort's infrastructure and its day-to-day operations.
To assess its performance against objective criteria and identify opportunities for improvement, AKI joined EarthCheck, the international benchmarking system for the tourism industry. In 2026, the resort achieved Bronze Benchmarking status for the first time, establishing a foundation for systematically measuring and improving its sustainability performance.
Making sustainability measurable
EarthCheck is an internationally recognised benchmarking and certification system developed for the tourism industry. It assesses hotel performance using measurable indicators, including energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and waste generation.
The data is calculated per guest night and compared with regional benchmarks, making it possible to track performance over time and identify areas for improvement.
AKI among the Regional Leaders
AKI's first benchmarking results already show performance well above regional standards across several key indicators.
The 2025 operational data reveals:
- Energy consumption: 199.3 MJ per guest night, compared with a regional benchmark of 480 MJ.
- Drinking water consumption: 339.1 litres per guest night, compared with 651.8 litres.
- Greenhouse gas emissions: 6.4 kg CO₂e per guest night, compared with 17.9 kg CO₂e.
These results highlight AKI's strong performance in regional benchmarking while providing a starting point for further improvement.
Behind the figures are practical measures: electricity from renewable sources, an on-site photovoltaic system that generates part of the resort's electricity, and district heating. These are complemented by structured approaches to water management, waste and procurement.
Employees also play an essential role. The resort's Green Team supports the implementation of initiatives, encourages collaboration between departments and helps drive continuous operational improvements.
Independently and thoroughly audited
In September 2026, AKI Family Resort Plose underwent its first independent on-site EarthCheck audit. Conducted against internationally established criteria, the assessment examined both documented procedures and their implementation in daily operations.
Auditors reviewed consumption data and monitoring methods, technical systems, management plans and operational procedures. The assessment also included interviews with managers and employees, inspections of different areas of the resort and sample checks.
Looking ahead
Achieving EarthCheck Bronze Benchmarking status, together with the strong regional results, provides AKI with a solid foundation for continued improvement.
The next steps include regularly reviewing performance indicators, closely monitoring energy and water consumption, and assessing the effectiveness of existing measures. Findings from the first audit will also help shape the ongoing development of the resort's sustainability management system.
This approach will allow AKI not only to compare its performance against regional benchmarks, but also to measure its own progress over time and identify where further action is needed.
